Jaunt Air Mobility announced today the Air Force Research Laboratory awarded the company a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract. The research team, including Triumph Aerospace Structures and Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), will investigate the integration of novel thermoplastic technologies and low-cost production techniques into an all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for commercial urban air mobility and military applications. This is one of three contracts awarded under the leadership of Martin Peryea, CEO of Jaunt Air Mobility.

The Navy’s $13 billion supercarrier still can’t reliably launch aircraft

It’s been more than three years since the Navy took delivery of the USS Gerald R. Ford, and the $13 billion aircraft carrier still can’t reliably generate sorties due to technical problems with its next-generation takeoff and landing systems, according to a new report.

The latest assessment of the Ford from the Defense Department’s operational testing and evaluation (OT&E) chief Robert Behler — obtained by Bloomberg News ahead of its formal distribution later this month — indicates that “poor or unknown reliability of new technology systems” like the aircraft carrier’s much-maligned electromagnetic launch system (EMALS) and advanced arresting gear (AAG)

Panel probing military aircraft accidents says U.S. pilots not flying enough

The end of another touch-and-go practice landing became anything but routine after a brief, loud noise filled the cockpit of the T-38C flown by Capts. John F. Graziano and Mark S. Palyok.

“What’s that?” one of the pilots asked.

A compressor stall and loss of engine thrust left Graziano with seconds to react as he took control of the Talon, the Air Force’s mainstay supersonic training jet. A probe into the Nov. 13, 2018 crash that killed Graziano, 28, of Elkridge, Md., found that he mishandled throttle and flight control inputs as the jet lost power on takeoff.
